The
Suit of Cups is governed by the element of Water and and so is connected
with the emotions and the full range of passions, from angst to zeal,
that the human heart is capable of showing. They reflect the emotional
and love relationships that so dominate our everyday lives and indicate
our gains and losses therein. The suit of Cups can also represent our
successes or failures on a personal level.
The cups also signify the intuition and psychic abilities that are present
within all of us, but not that we necessarily recognize them at the time.
The season pertaining to the suit of Cups is Autumn and its direction
is West..
The Astrological signs that come within the waters of the cups are the
water signs of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.

The
Ace of Cups
Harmony, great love and deep happiness are but some of the meanings
here. Also honesty and truth on a personal level. Great success and reward
is also heralded by the appearance of this card in a reading, though the
success is often of a personal nature.
revresed
Emotional upheaval, dishonesty and fickleness.

The
Root of The Powers of Water
A golden cup is in its element of water, bathed by rainbows and stars to
indicate all that is in nature, beautiful. There were many times when the
Amazons would celebrate their successes and their bounty by way of drinking,
dancing and songs in the orgiastic rites of their cult.
The Ace of Cups' message to us is that love is the gateway to enlightenment,
and has always been so throughout the ages.
With
honour and love and all things holy
Thoughts of love do abound;
The hearts desire is won most wholly
And contentment seems heaven bound |

The
Two of Cups
Astrological association: Cancer
Planetary influence: Venus
This card almost always refers to affairs of the
heart, of love, harmony and friendship. It shows the bond and the union
between two people, and depicts the sexual energy that is at hand. Sometimes
this card does refer to agreements and contracts being made.
reversed
Disillusionment, jealousy and conflicts of interests. A love that
has become strained and awkward. |
From ancient times to now the two cups symbolise harmony and agreement between
people, for what ever reason. The Amazon Queen Thalestris wanted an heir
and she felt that Alexander (the Great) would be an adequate consort. Alexander
received Thalestris and when she told him of her idea, Alexander agreed
that their union would be a beneficial one, but only on condition that she
sent him any male children born. They spent 13 days (a sacred number to
the Amazons, worshippers of Artemis, Goddess of the Moon, since there were
13 moons in the full year) alone together . When they were not hunting in
the wilds or feasting on their catch, they were busy attempting to realise
their goal.
We
come together, you and I
Across the sea of time
We stay together and we fly
To Islands more sublime…. |

The
Three of Cups
Astrological association: Cancer
Planetary influence: Mercury
Happiness, triumph and joy... a reason to celebrate.
All ventures being met with success. It is also a card known for heralding
love and good feelings between people.
reversed
Excesses of pleasure and the ensuing disappointment |
Not all the ancient divinities were brutal, warlike or as exacting as the
Amazons would devote themselves to.
In ancient times, the three sister Goddesses, known as the Graces were the
singers of songs for the Gods. Their names are Aglaia, Euphrosyne, and Thalia,
which mean "splendour," "mirth" and "good cheer."
and were attendants of Aphrodite. The Graces were always together, a triple
incarnation of grace and beauty. Anyone who received them was truly blessed
and happy, and their presence at banquets was a must.
Rejoice
with me for there is love;
I heal my wounds of old...
Happiness falls from the world above
And success lines the streets with gold… |

The
Four of Cups
Astrological association: Cancer
Planetary influence: The Moon
Imaginary vexation, disassociation with reality
and an unwillingness to see or accept what is
on offer. Weariness, Apathy and indecision. Dreamlike or intoxicated state
is the perceived way of escaping ones worries. Also mixed pleasure.
reversed
The meanings remain relatively unaltered, though sometimes a new beginning
is intimated. |
An apprehensive woman is sat at a table amidst trees and columns, pondering
a goblet of wine that no longer satisfies. She sees three more, but can't
decide if these are reality or dream. An air of apathy and discontentment
looms. Reflected by one account after rejecting the advances of Apollo,
Cassandra was to have said "I promised consent to Apollo but broke
my word... and ever since that fault I could persuade no one." (Aeschylus)
in a tone almost equating apathy as if to ask 'what should I do now...'.
Here
I sit within my dreams
I hear and see no thing out there;
I have no will or so it seems
So all I do is sit and stare… |

The
Five of Cups
Astrological association: Scorpio
Planetary influence: Mars
Essentially this is a card of loss, but it is
also a card of hope as not all is lost from the situation as something salvageable
is left over. It also refers to looking to what one has got rather than
what one has not. This card also refers to looking to the future and letting
go of the past, depending on the situation and surrounding cards
reversed
The meaning remains the same, but perhaps in the eye of the beholder,
a little less optimistic. |
A veiled dancing girl is casting aside three cups, with little interest
in anything else. She does not pay too much heed to the two cups that are
left standing, ready for the needs of a new day. Clouds gather in the background,
or do they disperse...?
Even though things are lost, there is much that remains.... it's a bit like
a cat and its nine lives. The cat was sacred to Artemis as a creature of
the wilds and a superior hunter. Present day bits of folklore have trickled
down to us over many ancient moons to the present day, including that about
the nine lives of the cat. This particular myth(?) was derived from the
sacred number of Artemis's 'daughters', the nine Muses. It also connected
her to the Egyptian Goddess Bast.
Loosing
out half darkens the day
Where all seems lost and with no gains
Persevere and you'll find a way
There's much to work with that remains |

The
Six of Cups
Astrological association: Scorpio
Planetary influence: The Sun
This is primarily a card of nostalgia, but also
of return. It refers to a time when things were more comfortable, but also
indicates that this time, or something like it will come again. It is a
card that links the past with the future as it shows a time of exploration
ahead.
reversed
Again this card looks at the future, of renewal and that which will
come to pass presently. |
Two Amazonian children are seen in a temple area, exploring six cups filled
with flowers.
It has been said in another account about Cassandras' gift of divination,
that Cassandra and her brother Helenus acquired their prophetic power
when they, as children, were left overnight in the temple of Apollo Thymbraeus,
and when they were found the following morning, serpents were seen licking
their ears... The gift of prophesy was to be theirs for life; past, present
and future.
Look
into the future, look into the past
The present connects the two states,
For better times soon once more will be cast,
And comfort returns and placates

The
Seven of Cups
Astrological association: Scorpio
Planetary influence: Venus
Illusion and imaginary solutions. Things
that are not quite what they seem, or that are actually without substance.
False hopes and the receiving of empty promises are also indicated here,
as is the confusion that accompanies them.
reversed
Desire, will, determination. |
A woman is laying by the water side contemplating the reflection of the
the spiritual elements in the air.. all of which are an illusion, or are
they? Some accounts say that when Paris abducted the beautiful Helen and
took her to Troy, he returned home to his city with little more than a phantom
fashioned out of clouds by the Gods, and that Helen herself denied ever
having been to Troy. Any promises made here were indeed false and empty...
Empty
promises; falsehood in hope
Confusion hangs in the air,
For now there's an absence of will that can cope
As illusion creeps in everywhere… |

The
Eight of Cups
Astrological association: Pisces
Planetary influence: Saturn
A degree of hopelessness is intimated here, and
that a matter, once thought important, is in decline
and of less relevance, as if direction has been
lost. As the matter becomes less important, so the person moves on in life
leaving the less than perfect situation behind.
reversed
Great joy and happiness is about to come to pass. |
We
see a stack of cups, neat and in formation though one is missing. A lone
figure rides away into a wilderness, but their thoughts remain. Pondering
on what has happened, and 'what if...?'
And so Cassandra stood alone...
Cassandra, cursed by Apollo; abandoned by her parents Priam and Hecuba;
mislead by Agamemnon; murdered by Clytemnestra and disbelieved by all; always
hoping for the best, but only ever seeing the worst.
The
stormy times are over
The troubles have now gone;
Let them go, become a rover,
For it's time now to move on… |

The
Nine of Cups
Astrological association: Pisces
Planetary influence: Jupiter
Satisfaction and accomplishment and the enjoyment of the fruits there after.
Friendship. This card is also known as 'the wishing card' and it is worth
remembering the old phrase "be careful what you wish for..." as
you are also bound by the responsibilities that your wishes bring.
reversed
This cards' meaning doesn't alter very much in reverse, though imperfections
and catches need to be dealt with. |
Another version of Cassandras' legend says that Cassandra had wished for
the gift of prophesy, which was then given to her by Apollo, though this
was no to be with out strings... Cassandra's prophecies played a part at
every key moment during the history of Troy. She foretold that an unknown
young man was fated to cause the downfall of the city, and when he arrived,
she saw it was Paris. She was on the point of having him executed when she
realised that he was one of the many sons of King Priam, and this saved
his life. Later when Paris returned to Troy with the abducted Helen, she
predicted that this abduction would lead to the downfall of Troy but, as
usual, no one believed her. And so it all went.... if only she had regarded
the consequences of her actions...
All
good things I bring to you,
health and wealth shall be yours...
Take care lest these dreams come true
For I close as soon as open doors... |

The
Ten of Cups
Astrological association: Pisces
Planetary influence: Mars
Great love and desire, happiness and marriage with a fortunate family life.
Blossoming friendship and the perfect state of contentment are the gift
of this card. A happy home.
reversed
Unhappiness in the home, quarrels and misunderstandings. Also deceit and
falsehood. |
In a wooded glade stands a beautiful maiden, in love and waiting for her
betrothed to appear in anticipation of their marriage.
Antiope, whose name means, "Confronting Moon", was an Amazon Queen
and the only Amazon ever known to truly marry. When she was abducted
by Hercules and brought to Athens, one description says that she fell in
love with and married its king, Theseus. The result of their union was a
son, and he was named Hippolytus after Antiope's sister Hippolyta (Hippolyte)
and he grew up devoted to the Goddess Artemis and remained a virgin in Her
name.
Rainbows
reign high with love in the sky,
With happiness pleasure and light;
A family union will soon come by
As a wedding is firmly in sight… |

The
Princess of Cups
A quiet and intelligent person who is studious.
A young woman who is poetic and creative, but also a dreamer. This card
can also reveal hidden talents in an individual that can and soon will be
realised. New intelligence. The earthy aspect of water
reversed
Deception and artifice. A lazy and critical individual. |
A mermaid is seen rising up out of the waters of a mystical cup. The original
image of the ancient and indeed disturbing (Moon Goddess) Lilith was portrayed
as a woman, but one with a fish or serpents' tail. Lilith was the first
object of love to Adam and she unveiled his sexual nature to him, so revealing
new intelligence about his 'hidden talents'... But she goes further back
then that for where did she get this knowledge from..? Some say that the
fish/serpents tail (phallic symbols both) was the result of penetration
by some great 'serpent' or 'fish'... so with whom did she make love and
was Adam actually her son? Or has she always been an androgynous figure
whose male and female sides became separated when Man, and Woman
became 'aware....'?
I
see visions in a cup...
Images of mind that now take form,
This to you I offer up,
And with this gift I you inform... |

The
Knight of Cups
Messages and news are coming, and this can include
and invitation, proposition or an offer about to be made. Sometimes though
there are delays here and things will progress slowly as there could be
much to get through to facilitate this. This card can also signify an open
minded man who is artistic and imaginative. The the airy aspect of water.
reversed
Deceit, fraud, trickery and similar things. A person who is too much of
a dreamer to be in real contact with reality. |
If you were not born an Amazon, you could only become one by 'invitation':
that is to receive the Right of Caste from an Amazon at the time
of her death, and so be invited to become her successor.
The Death Right challenge was a battle for the Right of Caste when
it was contested. The request for the Death Right would be made directly
to the rulers of the community, and a series of challenges would be made
before deciding if you are indeed worthy of a chance for the Death Right,
and ultimately the Right of Caste. This procedure would not happen over
night but would take time to employ.
I
share the dreams that speak to me,
Whispering in my ear...
Though sometimes I wish not to see
That which comes to bring me here... |
| |
The
Queen of Cups
A fair woman. One who is kind and generous and
also a visionary. A helpful and trustworthy individual to the querent. A
romantic and loving woman with deep sentiments and great sensitivity. A
woman born under a water sign. The watery aspect of water.
reversed
A dishonest woman who although a charmer on the outside is out for what
she can gain. A moody and scheming woman.
|
The Amazons were known for helping each other especially during combat.
They never lost their sense of loyalty or duty to one another. The men,
however, like today's married women(!), spent their days about the house,
carrying out the chores which were given to them by their mates. As a rule,
some say that they took no part in military campaigns or in the exercise
of free citizenship and owned no land, though they worked the lands belonging
to the women. From their birth, the babies were turned over to the men,
who brought them up on milk and such cooked foods as were suitable for the
children.
Beauty
and dreaming, psychic insight
I devote myself to you...
With visions I bring both by day and by night
Come pleasure, and wisdom so true.. |
| |
The
King of Cups
A strong and fair man who is both creative and
successful and is well versed in the law. An intellectual and educated man.
One who is honest and will be of help. A man born under a water sign. The
fiery aspect of water.
reversed
A man who is not to be trusted. A callous and manipulative individual who
can be quite ruthless when at times. |
The
Lord of The Powers of Water
We see the face of a fair but handsome King in the time honoured tradition
of the classical hero gazing thoughtfully from behind his cup.
Amazons were considered as very brave, daring and fearless combatants, and
so only the most famous Greek heroes such as Hercules, Achilles and
Theseus were deemed capable of defeating them. But as women, the Amazons
were also seen as desirable, as was seen when Theseus, king of Athens, abducted
the Amazon Queen Antiope and took her to be his wife.
I
hold the cup of Light aloft,
I honour law, divinity...
I am fair, my heart is soft...
I flourish with sensitivity... |
