With
the fire of life giving energy
I create and move forwards, and go...
I am the earth bound visionary
And unravel that which you should know... |
|
The
Suit of Wands is governed by the element of Fire and and so is connected
with all things to do with the creativity, creative energy, growth and
vision (intuition), as well as the physical side of activity.
This suit also encompasses the sheer determination and strength of the
will or spirit and the seemingly limitless energy needed to go, go,
go...
There is also a medical connection with the wands, though this more
often reveals itself as the more natural side of healing.
The season linked to the suit of wands is Summer, and its direction
is South.
The Astrological signs that come under the boughs of the suit of wands
are the Fire signs of Aires, Leo and Sagittarius.

The
Ace of Wands
This card generally heralds a transformation. It is the symbol of
energy, fertility, growth and the beginning of a new spiritual understanding.
There are many new opportunities that come with this card, but it is up
to us to reach out and take them. It is also a card of personal prowess,
particularly of the sexual kind if drawn for or about a man.... and it
can mean conception for a woman, or indeed a man.
reversed
Stagnation, Spiritual emptiness, delays and cancellations and the accompanying
feeling that you are getting nowhere fast. |
The
Root of The Powers of Fire
Standing in the grounds of a crude but ancient
temple is a statue of a warrior woman, or Goddess? She holds a burning
Staff. The legacy of the Amazons has
left many female Deities who seem to be synonymous with each other, spanning
across times antiquity. They all share the uniqueness of Phrygian Cybele,
Cybele being one of the patron Goddesses of the Amazons. Be She the Lydian
Mother, Cybele or Cybebe; Rhea of Crete; Hecate of Samothrace or any of
her other incarnations, She
is a Goddess of Nature, whose rites include orgiastic ceremonies and whose
protection, as that of a woman-warrior, was claimed by her followers.
Artemis Tauropolos, to whom the Amazons sacrificed, was said to be a form
of Cybele, probably Tauric Artemis. Noteworthy
perhaps, because the Amazons are shown to have been the votaries of the
Nature Goddess, by whatever name they knew her.
Creative fire burns with passion
For growth and simplicity;
The fire of life does firmly fashion
Great joy and fertility.

Two of Wands
Astrological
association: Aries
Planetary influence: Mars
A time for character development and the development of new ideas and
new opportunities, the main preparation having been done. You must decide
how best to take full advantage of the situation. The choice may regarding
which path to follow on with.
reversed
Arguments and loss of interest in the projects at hand. Loss of faith
and confidence to see them through. Indecision. Sometimes ill-health is
foretold here. |
An Amazon is by the sea at sunset glorifying the name of her Goddess.
In the highlands of central Anatolia lies the ancient
region of Phrygia (now Turkey). The Amazons worshipped their Goddess in
the form of a mysterious black stone. If this was indeed a meteorite as
some would suppose, then the Amazons would truly have seen it as a visitation
from their Goddess.... This stone sat alone on an altar in an open temple,
built on the sacred island of Aretias, a strange bird haunted island in
the Black Sea off the coast of Colchis. Queen Otrera decided to build
a temple here when the Amazons first settled by the sea, and here they
continued to worship in preparation for war.
I
contemplate the world around.
And dream of things to be,
And in my search the things
I've found Are the seeds of opportunity.

Astrological

The
opportunity is here to take up a new goal and pursue new interests; and
let go of the old ways. A spirit of new enterprise. A quest for the new.
reversed
Difficulties in setting goals. Becoming apathetic and disinterested
in the plans that ought to be made and becoming too passive generally...
With this card reversed, there is a certain reluctance to move on. |
An Amazon is seen looking across a lake at sunset, or is it sun rise...
The Ancient Scythian Goddess, Artemis, was once a powerful Sun Goddess.
A brutal and cruel deity, she demanded absolute devotion from her followers
to the point of human sacrifices. Her legend transcends time and cultural
barriers in that this Goddess ('she who reigned in the time of Virgil'
) was said by Merlin, no less, to have settled by the shores of
a great lake at Broceliande. This lake was eventually called 'Lake of
Diana' (Artemis' Roman name) after she herself had gone on to meet her
destiny with eternity...
I look across the sea to you,
I
wait with hand on heart,
I know my will can pull me through,
As I begin this fresh start

The
Four of Wands
Astrological
association: Aries
Planetary influence: Venus
This
card signifies the completion of a situation or part of your life, or
one that is about to come to pass. When things have gone around 'full
circle'. There is an air of success and celebration around the corner
as the success is well deserved.
reversed
A hasty start which leads to complications and failure in a venture if
care is not taken. It is a time to be cautious and guard any success gained.
Uncertainty and all that follows. |
In
front of a temple are the spiritual dancers leading the rites to the worship
of their Goddess.
The antediluvian temple on Aretias, the sacred isle of the Amazons, was
said to be roofless. It had a basic altar created from pebbles. A black
stone was set like a jewel in the midst of this altar, and this stone
was the most sacred object in the spiritual sect of the Amazon nation.
This mystifying black stone was a connection to something very old and
not human, and not of this Earth... a gift of the gods perhaps; and in
the ancient era of the Amazons, these 'Moon-women' knew this and valued
it above everything else.
There's
joy and comfort to be had
In this temple seat;
With celebrations to be glad,
The cycle then becomes complete |

The
Five of Wands
Astrological
association: Leo
Planetary influence: Saturn
Competition and struggle to achieve your goals, but it is also noteworthy
that this could be a practise fight meaning that the success that is sought
is not beyond the realms of possibility. With this in mind, this is a
card that signifies gain, but through your own efforts.
reversed
Discord and disharmony, particularly in any current negotiations. Quarrelling
and deception along with contradiction.

Five amazon women are seen practising and perfecting their fighting skills,
as if in a mock battle.
During the age of the Amazons, it was the women who practised and perfected
the arts of war and as such they were required to serve in the army for
a fixed time, during which they kept their virginity. After their years
of service in the field had ended, they joined with the men for the procreation
of children. It has been said that the Amazons didn't breast feed their
children but fed them from the milk of their totem animal, the horse...
The men raised the children whilst their Amazonian mates kept control
of all the administration of the law and of all the affairs of state.
Everywhere,
anywhere, where do we go?
What are we doing right here?
Are troubles and strife the seeds that we sew,
Or will our banter soon become clear? |

The
Six of Wands
Astrological
association: Leo
Planetary influence: Jupiter
Victory and optimism and public recognition for work well done or for
efforts made, and subsequent 'victory parade'. Also great news that is
being brought to you. The right choice, the right path that has been taken.
reversed
A strong opponent who seems about to defeat you. Apprehension and fear.
Indefinite delay. |
Several warriors are seen performing a dance as if in celebration and
thanks giving, of victory.
Once a year, the Amazons had an orgiastic feast of dedication. At first,
it was thought to have taken place on a granite rock in the Caucasus.
Later with their inevitable migration, this rite was transplanted to the
Ares Isle (Aretias?) in the Black Sea. As horses were not viewed just
as beasts of burden but were considered sacred to the moon on account
that their hooves made a crescent moon-shaped mark, a white stallion would
be taken in a deeply secret rite, and sacrificed.
Hail
the victory parade is here!
A time with good news you will treasure;
Celebrate now for your success is near
Combining rewards with great pleasure… |

The
Seven of Wands
Astrological
association: Leo
Planetary influence: Mars
This is a card of valour, for although the situation currently at hand
is proving difficult, you have not lost to it yet and are able to 'keep
your head'. Keep that and you keep your advantage. This card also signifies
discussion, debate, negotiations and so forth and that success is achievable.
reversed
Caution against indecision and procrastination. Don't over estimate yourself
or stretch your resources. |
Here
we see six opponents attacking the one, but they cannot reach or defeat
her as she has the advantageous position. Of the many famous Amazon queens
who ruled and conquered, Queen Hippo was instrumental in the founding
of such cities as Ephesus, Smyrna, Cyrene, and Myrina She was amongst
the bravest of the Amazons and went on to conquer Asia Minor and Syria. It was
at Epheseus that she had fashioned a wooden statue of Artemis and placed
it next to a beech tree for all to wonder at. Amazons
would often go there to perform their rituals like the shield dance, which
involved beating the ground in unison to the sound of pipes playing a
wild, warlike and frenzied melody.
Fighting
proudly from the ledge
Opponents are left down the slope;
Whilst calmly knowing that you have the edge,
Keep vigilant and you will cope. |

The
Eight of Wands
Astrological
association: Sagittarius
Planetary

Great activity in your undertakings and the energy that goes with it.
The swiftness of events and speed towards an end which promises great
satisfaction. Great hope. As a rule, that which is on the move. Also the
Arrows of love...
reversed
The Arrows of Jealousy, disputes both domestic and otherwise; quarrels. |
The
Amazons were well versed in the art of warfare. They had become experts
in the field of single combat and had learned how to use most weapons
to great effect. As well as the now celebrated use of the Labrys, the
Amazons were so skilled with a bow and arrow that they could hit an invariably
moving target/opponent whilst at full gallop. The
horse was special to them and their prowess as exceptional horsewomen
was becoming legendary throughout the region. It is said that performing
such equestrian feats as dancing on horseback, standing up whilst at a
full gallop, jumping from one horse to another, and leaping bareback across
roaring fires were simply everyday events to them.
The
Arrows of love shoot forth from heaven
Swift changes are coming to you;
Transition is easy the path way is even
And destiny now beckons you… |

The
Nine of Wands
Astrological
association: Sagittarius
Planetary influence: The Sun
This card reveals strength in opposition and any attack may well prove
futile as the opponent has the superior strength. Any obstacles encountered
here will prove difficult to master, giving rise to delays in all areas.
However, although great, the obstacles encountered are not entirely insurmountable.
reversed
Basically the same as above, but the situation can be brought on by carelessness.
Failure to protect yourself adequately. |
Penthesilea, daughter of Ares and Amazon Orithia, took twelve hand picked
Amazon warriors to Troy with her where she faced enormous odds for being
at odds with the Greeks and on the side of the Trojans. Although they
did achieve part of their objective by, albeit temporarily, freeing Troy
from the Greeks, the Amazon Band did eventually all die in this conflict.
Only Penthesilea achieved her full objective by dying, and so cleansing
herself of her guilt for the death of her sister Hippolyta. The twelve
are listed below:
Ainia, Alcibie, Antandre, Antibrote Bremusa, Derimacheia, Derinoe, Harmothoe,
Hippothoe, Polemusa, Thermodosa and Clete, who was looking to join Penthesilea
at Troy, but was blown off course and founded a city in Italy instead.
"I
bar your way and there you must stay
For I am a difficult foe…
To vanquish me you must set yourself free
From all bondage before you go…" |

The
Ten of Wands
Astrological
association: Sagittarius
Planetary influence: Saturn
The Ten of Wands symbolises oppression. This could be the oppression that
comes with success and gain however, as well as oppression in general.
It brings with it's gain and fortune the weight of all the new responsibilities
that can crush us if we are not aware.
reversed
Burdens are shed but there are many contrarieties and difficulties that
need to be ironed out. Although the hardships seem to be passing, you
are not out of the woods yet. |
A warrior is carrying
arms in the form of staves and she is seen to struggle with their weight.
Once ascended under somewhat dubious circumstances of the untimely death
of her sister Hippolyta (who she accidentally speared in a stag hunt near
Themiskyra), the new Queen, Penthesilea had an obligation to fulfil for
her people, regardless of the circumstances of her rule. Not everyone
believed that Hippolytas' death was an accident and so the start of Penthesilea's
reign was peppered with threats of revenge from her own people as well
as her constant persecution by the Furies. She readily took on the mantle
of Queen, but the most fundamental duty, to care for her people was replaced
with her obligation to slake the Furies' thirst for retribution by the
shedding of her own blood. At the same time Penthesilea hoped to win back
her people's affection by proving she was not not reluctant to go, novice
Queen that she was, into a situation (at Troy) where she would most likely
die.
Burdens
I bear that I carry with me
Things that I will thrust upon
The place that I go to eventually,
As I pick up my sticks and move on… |

The
Princess of Wands
Fears
are to be conquered and difficulties trounced. The ensuing freedom from
worry gives rise to a second wind and fresh vigour with which to greet
the day. Get rid of the pent up excesses of energy by way of meditation
and/or dance... Another account says that this card represents a faithful
and honest young person coming in to your midst. and or good news concerning
him/her. The earthy aspect of fire.
reversed
Indecision and instability, insecurity. Bad news and the rumours that
it can spread. |
An Amazon warrior
is seen dancing in the shield dance.... This particular rite involved
the measured beating of drums, the clashing of cymbals, and the frenzied
music of the pipe along with the beating on the ground to the rhythm which
set the pace for the rapturous movement of the worshippers in the cult
of Cybele and the other patron Goddesses of the Amazons. This developed
into a form of 'divine madness', which bestowed upon those partaking with
a sense of celestial rapture and paranormal power. The
power of feminine enchantment was often believed essential for triumph.
Numerous legends refer to the Amazon's magic battle-cries, which rendered
their adversaries impotent...
The
news I bear I bring to you,
With heart of music and song...
Of love and favour through and through
I am the emissary that comes along...

The
Knight of Wands
As
is the nature of the suit of Wands, the presence of this card in a reading
indicates a great deal of movement, energy and action. It most often reveals
travel plans, either short or long term and even emigration. The Knight
also reveals a move of home; a change of residence or changes in general
that are to come. A dark young man. This is the airy aspect of fire.
reversed
Chaos and disorganisation are the order of the day. Discord in general
and the futile wasting of energy in unrealistic pursuits. |
The knight is
once more represented by a centaur, carrying a flaming staff. The Amazons
had a special affinity for the horse and so it became their totem animal.
The magnetism felt by the Amazons for the horse gave rise to it becoming
more than just a swift, strong bearer of burden. The horse became an enchanted
icon of fervent desires and the driving force of the Amazonian aspirations.
Their affinity with their equine companions was so great that it was once
said Pegasus sprang forth from the blood of the Libyan Amazon Medusa,
so suggesting that the Amazon did indeed have magic horse blood in her
veins as well as the wrath of Ares and beauty of Harmonia...
How
swiftly far across the plain,,
With changing place at hand...
I bring to you this new domain
Which could be here or other land... |
 |
The
Queen of Wands
A
dark haired woman who is loving, honourable and honest. An exotic or extrovert
woman with a zest for life and a love of nature. A woman born under a
fire sign. This card an also signify a time scale, generally looking towards
a few months ahead of the present. The watery aspect of fire.
reversed
A thoughtless and jealous woman who lacks all consideration. Even deceit
and infidelity. An unstable woman. |
Among the patron Goddesses of the Amazons, the Ancient Cybele was greatly
revered as the 'Mother of the Gods', and in time the Amazons devoted the
island of Samothrace to her, establishing her altars and carrying out
glorious sacrifices there. Her worship was complemented by the sound of
crashing drums and cymbals, the music of pipes, and the voices of her
frenzied disciples. Sometimes the ceremonies would get so far removed
from their original purpose, that they would appear as almost unrecognisable
due o the extreme expression of the participants.
Let
me show you things sublime,
For I am creativity...
I also see so well through time
And can sing about what is to be... |
 |
The
King of Wands
A dark and honest man. A creative individual who is passionate and loyal,
helpful and conscientious. He is wise and educated and by some accounts,
generally married! This can also be a man born under a fire sign.
This is the fiery aspect of fire.
reversed
An extremely sever and overbearing man who is highly, and perhaps unjustly
critical. |
The
Lord of the Powers of Fire
For the continuation of the Amazon nation and after
their 'national service', the women had sexual intercourse with men from the various neighbouring tribes for
a short period once or twice a year. Any male children born from these
unions were either sent back to the tribes of origin, or crippled- even
killed. The female children were kept within the Amazon family to carry
on the brave fight.
There have been suggestions however, that the Amazons didn't even need
men, that they got what they wanted from the horse.... but that is another story...
I sit in calm stability
With creative thought in mind...
I
bear this flame with energy
And show you where you seek, you find... |
