Swords
of the mind are made of steel,
They're swift and sharp in their fight,
Though their way is to wound then to heal,
They cut down, cut clean with their swift might. |
|
The
Suit of Swords is governed by the element of Air and and so is connected
with all things to do with the mind, and the power of thought which ultimately
enables you to mould or change your world. Keenly sharp, the suit of swords
also symbolises the intellect. However, their darker side gives vivid
illustration of the infamous 'Daggers of the Mind' and so accurately exemplifying
Human nature itself, especially when things are bad, for is it not then
that we are at our best with the determination and courage the swords
also reflect? By their very nature as a cutting instrument the Swords
can also reveal surgical procedures and other health issues coming to
pass.
The season linked to the suit of swords is Springtime, and its direction
is East.
The Astrological signs that come under the wings of the suit of Swords
are the Air signs of Libra, Gemini and Aquarius. |

 |
The
Ace of Swords
The ace of Swords is primarily a card of triumph over adversity and
of new beginnings which it heralds with optimism and flair. It can also
signify the cutting of ties (hence new beginnings) and new found freedom
from that which has dragged us down. Surgical procedures are also indicate
here.
reversed
More or less the same, but the results can be disastrous, depending
on the other cards around it. |
The
Root of The Powers of Air
The sword is shown flying high above the clouds
giving us a sense of the new found freedoms and the achievements that are
within our reach. Whoever has the sword, has the power and this was never
more true than in the ancient world. The Amazons were no strangers to the
secret of the sword's strength and the greater strength and skill it took
to wield it effectively. This made them a force to be reckoned with, and
our Amazon sisters held their swords high by birth right or Right of Caste
and not merely 'femme fatale' fantasy.
With
the shining blade poised ready
As it's held up in the air,
Our enemies are vanquished;
Blinded by its glare…

The
Two of Swords
Astrological
association: Libra
Planetary influence: The Moon
A
time of balance and compromise is at hand or this is the best result that
can be achieved. Friendship and agreement is also shown here as is a sense
of harmony and even peace and happiness. It is worth pointing out though
that the double edge of the sword should be noted as the swords are not
generally known for their positive aspects.
reversed
Overly defensive attitude, sometimes falsehood and disloyalty. |
The deep and focused eyes of our unknown Amazon Warrior gaze with intensity
upon the twin metallic blades as she ponders the outcome of a decision that
will ultimately bring about victory or ruin. Although the Amazons did venerate
the sun and its life giving properties, their culture and military strategies
were practised under the homage and the lore of the Moon. The evening tide
with the setting of the sun and deep glow of the reflecting moon illustrates
the philosophy of the Two Of Swords.
I
hold my swords in Harmony,
With judgement unimpaired;
I find my way to unity,
With compromises shared…

The
Three of Swords
Astrological
association: Libra
Planetary influence: Saturn
This
card tells of broken hearts and wounded emotions. All that is reviled, negative
and burdensome within the human spirit is embodied here. The Three of Swords
also reveals a third, less welcome party in a relationship. Also this card
can reveal health issues and surgical procedures.
reversed
The same but to a lesser degree. |
A full red heart is seen trapped by three swords as in a prison, unable
to avoid the lightning hurt that afflicts it. The Amazon Nation has always
been regarded as a war-faring one and highly trained in the art of death
and so could not allow the emotions to surface and show weakness within
their ranks. Each year, however, when the autumn crossed swords with the
winter, The Amazons held a special festival to enable the release of their
grief and so granting them deliverance, and allowing them to move on.
The
three of swords, or three of sorrows;
My heart does break and bleed,
I cover my eyes to avoid those tomorrows
Though my soul cries out from my need…
|
 |
The
Four of Swords
Astrological
association: Libra
Planetary influence: Jupiter
A
time of repose, retreat and contemplation. A time for healing. Sometimes
vigilance is indicated. Other accounts suggest that this is also a card
of mourning.
reversed
It is time once more to re-enter the rat-race and to quite literally
take the bull by the horns and to once more get on with life. |
More traditional in its imagery, this card shows four swords with one lying
by its owners side. Our Amazon warrior lies resting in 'the Great Sleep'
in the same way as many a great ruler or soldier of the ages has done so,
for truly her place in the annals of history and legend command no less.
However, it's worth pointing out that the Amazon graves were characterised
by the owners shield becoming their markers though some Amazon graves show
that Amazons were sometimes buried with their horses.... And the modern
day church? this shows that although the Amazon nation is no more, it's
spirit has endured to the modern day: it is called woman.
Here
I lie as time goes by;
My Friends, avenge me not….
For in this tomb, this cool stone room,
I rest from battles fought |
 |
The
Five of Swords
Astrological
association: Aquarius
Planetary influence: Venus
Picking
up the pieces of your life and, reluctantly, moving on. Be it after quarrels,
separations or similar. Although there is a sense of abandonment or a mood
of defeat that accompanies this card, it does, in a roundabout way, herald
a new beginning.
reversed
The meanings remain the same, but it can speak of burials and other
obsequies when in the proximity of similar cards.
|
A disheartened Amazon is seen sitting on the ground having gathered several
swords -the remains of an armoury- some of which have fallen from her grasp.
Their owners are seen wandering off into the distance. From being a warrior,
our Amazon has now become a survivor and must gather her strength to face
what is next. As with the three, a special festival just before winter was
set aside for the Amazons to release themselves from their grief and to
progress to the new phase of life when there was nothing left to be done
with the old one.
With
sombre mood and heavy heart
We realise what has gone…
We hesitate to this fresh start,
But with heavy heart, move on… |

The
Six of Swords
Astrological
association: Aquarius
Planetary influence: Mercury
Overcoming
of present difficulties, so sailing into smoother waters in a transitional
period that leads to better times. Also overseas travel is indicated.
reversed
Though the situation is seen to be improving, it is not going as
smoothly as planned and delays are indicated. Plans of travel with be hindered. |
Six swords are seen bridging a gulf of difference, thus taking us from a
dubious and troubled past into a more comfortable present. We see an Amazon
in a more relaxed stance, taking in the beauty of Aretias (today Giresun
Adasi, where ancient rites are still performed and certain festivals are
still dominated by women), the Sacred island of the Amazons, which was said
to be off the coast of Colchis in the Black Sea. This would show that they
indeed did cross the seas to further their military conquests and personal
journeys and would return to worship, their tasks being done.
We
journey over the deep blue sea
And come across new territory,
All new land and things we find,
And leave our troubles far behind… |
 |
The
Seven of Swords
Astrological
association: Aquarius
Planetary influence: The Moon
Facing
ones challenges boldly and with confidence with your pride as your shield.
However caution is advised as inconstancy and futility are revealed if badly
aspected.
As with other sword cards, the double edged nature of this suit is illustrated
in that this card also warns of trouble and quarrels and can even indicate
failure, picking up in defeat and moving on.
reversed
The problems foreseen by this card are easing and times will improve. |
An Amazon warrior is seen journeying to a new land carrying all that is
seen to be important to her. Yet there is something left behind which she
is powerless to retrieve.
Ancient Thermodon Amazon Queen Lysippe traversed the land surging forward
with her armies after her son, Tanais whose virginity and devotion to Artemis
caused his death by a jealous and rejected Aphrodite. Having moved on from
her homeland, she felt she could not return and founded a new city, Themiskyra
where she set about conquering further in honour of Ares and Artemis Tauropolis
(Taurica Dea) whose brutal worship, and indeed the Amazon way of life, she
is said to have founded.
Inconstant
Moon does wax and wane
To rise when the day is done;
But courage determined once more does reign
As she boldly faces the fire of the Sun |
 |
The
Eight of Swords
Astrological
association: Gemini
Planetary influence: Jupiter
A
time of great difficulties and restrictions where the querent is powerless
to do anything about it. Frustration and interference is also indicated,
as is an overpowering dominating force that controls against your best interests.
reversed
Not much changes when this card is reversed, though some accounts do say
that it heralds and end to difficult times as the clouds begin to disperse
and so clearing the mind. |
The swords are illustrated as the daggers of the mind and are seen baring
down on their unfortunate victim who is tied and bound and unable to resist.
They form the bars and walls of a prison... The plight of Antigone exemplifies
this card as she, like Cassandra, was a victim of controlling forces that
try as she might, she could not resist. Her quarrel was with the autocratic
King Creon of Thebes over her brother Polynices' duplicitous deeds, for
even though she was betrothed to the kings son, she had little authority
or defence. Still, as she confronted the King and challenged him over this,
it became clear to see who had the power and who was trapped within it.
Restrictions
rule with bonds so tight
Feel Antigone's pain…
For in this tunnel there is no light,
No progress and no gain… |
 |
The
Nine of Swords
Astrological
association: Gemini
Planetary influence: Mars
This
card depicts an overwhelming sense of anxiety and stress along with deep
fears and despondency. If this card had a name, it would be called 'Cruelty'.
Imprisonment and betrayal are also indicated and the sorrows and fears that
this card expresses are indescribable and as such the Nine of Swords is
a card of utter misery and isolation.
reversed
Unlike other cards reversed, when this card is reversed, the problems are
actually seen to intensify... other account refer to it as a card
of death. |
We see the face of a woman plagued by violent chagrin and persecution of
those infamous daggers of the mind. Cassandra was such a woman. Given the
gift of prophesy by Apollo, she then spurned his love and rejected him.
A gift of the Gods could never be taken back, so in his revenge, Apollo
cursed the beautiful Cassandra by spitting in her mouth, making sure that
her prophesies although remaining true, would never be believed. Cassandra's
life was governed by nightmares from which there was no escape. It was tragically,
or perhaps mercifully cut short by the murderous Queen Clytemnestra, wife
of conquering Agamemnon of Mycenae.
I
am the nightmare, colour me black
I bring you the worst of your dreams.
With tears and great sorrow to burden your back
'tis your fear that creates your screams... |
 |
The
Ten of Swords
Astrological
association: Gemini
Planetary influence: The Sun and Moon
In
spite of it's grim appearance, The Ten of Swords is not a card of violent
death. With this in mind this card sometimes shows that natural end to a
situation and in some ways a new beginning, especially if followed by an
equally positive card.. However, this card can represent pain, sadness,
grief and the accompanying tears. It can also reveal the kind of negative
and destructive thinking that can ruin a good situation.
reversed
The opposite applies though the state of success is a temporary one. It
is also a card of power and influence. |
A fallen Amazon warrior is seen laying outside a city in flames. This city
is the City of Troy, ruled over by King Priam, father of Cassandra, and
now ally to the Amazons lead by Penthesilea . This allegiance was doomed
as the Trojans and Amazons alike were vanquished by the Greeks and the City
of Troy was destroyed. Any good that came out of this devastation was that
Penthesilea was buried by the Trojans with the highest of honours bestowed
upon her. The name Penthesilea means "Compelling Men to Mourn"
and indeed she did for as legend has it, after her death at the hands of
Achilles, he took off her helmet and immediately mourned her passing to
such a degree that he violated her corpse. In life, as a Daughter of Ares,
she was a phenomenal warrior, but in death she had become a woman.
The
final curtain closes down,
The chapter comes to an end,
The vexing question makes us frown;
Where will the next path wend… |
 |
The
Princess of Swords
Vigilance
in the pursuit of truth and justice. Standing up for your rights and conquering
the more negative aspects of the self with the fresh intellectual clarity
that results from this. This is also a card of 'preparation'. Sometimes
this card can represent a very rebellious person. It is the earthy aspect
of air...
reversed
The more mercenary side of these qualities. Poor health is also indicated. |
A warrior stands in her element of Air, brandishing her sword .
Amazons were trained to use all forms of weaponry and especially in single
combat. In the ninth labour of Hercules, six Amazons fought him in single
combat knowing him to be invulnerable, before dying for their queen. They
were honourable and courageous, and represented rebellion against sexism
and male domination. Tales of their fearsome exploits spread quickly across
the land and soon stories of the Amazons were everywhere, including Africa,
Asia, Europe and the whole of the known world.
Vigilance
I bring to you,
And being ready to cut and run...
My caution will still see you through,
When all the overseeing's done... |
 |
The
Knight of Swords
Skill,
Bravery and enterprise with the resulting success in a situation brought
on by your own efforts. Excessive energy and zeal in getting things done. When
this card turns up in a reading, it is indicative that you are/will be making
sweeping changes in your life. Also, for a woman it means that her trials
will be overcome. Help comes from an unexpected source. It is the airy aspect
of air...
reversed
Destruction and even death can be foreseen by this card, though the latter
is only thus if in the vicinity of similar cards. |
The symbolism of the Knight of Swords has been embodied by a Centaur. It
has been said that although the Centaurs were the sworn enemies of the Amazons,
couplings between them did take place.... accounts vary here but it has
been suggested that centaurs were actually the male half of the Amazon
population and that they were infact the men folk (like I said, sworn enemies!)
who, as they tended the fields and the animals, did so on horse back. Thus,
to the onlooker, there would appear to be half men/half horse creatures
riding within the realm.
The vigour by which this Knight approaches his tasks can be clearly seen.
Both fearsome and skilled in his stance, the Knight of Swords parades through
his element of Air. His fearless approach emulates the attitude of the Amazons
in Battle. Whether out numbered or in superior force, the apocryphal Amazons
were a force not to be trifled with.
Both
swift of steel and sure am I,
With greatness and with chivalry...
But also wrath and war come nigh,
With this cry of bravery... |
 |
The
Queen of Swords
Traditionally,
the Queen of Swords is a card that can represent a cold and indignant woman.
There is also female sadness (widowhood) separation and mourning indicated
here. But, there is a softer side to her nature, and a creative one with
an abundance of ideas. She is a woman of strength and determination. She
reveals the masculine energy of a woman and the feminine energy of a man. This
card can also represent a woman who is an Air sign. It is the watery aspect
of air...
reversed
A deceitful prudish and sharp tongued woman. Malice and bigotry. A corrupt
and poisoned situation. |
Two Queens are shown here in their element of air holding the warriors sword.
The Amazons, skilled and versed in the art of warfare were also self sufficient
on the domestic front. They were successful in this balance because they
had two queens to rule them. One for the more nurturing domestic rule and
one for defence and the aggressive military campaigns that carved their
path through the chapters of antiquity and into the annals of legend. This
card also reflects the dual nature of the Goddess Artemis, who personified
the duality between good and evil as both existed within her.
Here
I sit upon my throne,
Alone in my sad sorrow....
I face my trials all alone,
But reach towards tomorrow.
|
 |
The
King of Swords
Judgement,
power and all its official connections are represented by the King of Swords
which can include legal matters and disputes, for the symbol of the sword
is never far from the the portrayal of justice. Sometimes however this card
can represent a doctor or surgeon. Career matters are also revealed here.
However this card can also represent a man born under an Air sign. It is
the fiery aspect of air...
reversed
A cruel and heartless individual. Ruinous litigation, cruelty and inhumanity. |
The
Lord of the Powers Of Air
The
face of a strong and powerful King gazes
past a sword held slightly to one side as if to acknowledge you. He is in
his element of Air.
With what the King of Swords represents standing outside the regular day
to day existence of our lives, is the reflection of Hippolytus, the only ever male Amazon. His life was one of utter devotion to the Goddess
Artemis and he set himself aside from the normal lives of men in that he
made no bond with a mortal woman. This king bridges the gap between the
Major and Minor Arcana.
I
sit in judgement, sword held high,
Giving justice out to all...
I see the truth where e'er it lie
And bring its power to my call..
