The Suit of The Pentacles:
 These Pentacles of magic
Are Pentacles of old,
The ruling element is Earth,
With its magic and its Gold...
The Suit of Pentacles is governed by the element of Earth and and so is connected with all things to do with the material and physical things in life including career and also health issues. This suit can also speak of matters concerning the home.
It is often said that the Pentacles reveal whatever influences are around that give us a sense of security and belonging. As such they represent the elements in our lives that ground us and give us stability, and so a resulting sense of realism.
The season linked to the suit of Pentacles is Winter, and its direction is North.
The Astrological signs that come within the realm of the suit of Pentacles are the Earth signs of Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo.
The Cards The Meanings Imagery and the Amazon Spirit
The Ace of Pentacles
Glory and success in all paths, contentment and happiness. The meaning of this card goes beyond the material wealth and into the realms of the more rewarding side of emotional richness. The perfect state of harmony. This lucky card can also signify the gift of a ring and a marriage.
reversed
A downturn in fortunes and security, and a relationship that will not work out. The darker side of wealth, as the route to all evil that riches bestow.

The Root of The Powers of Earth
A golden shield with symbols on it is depicted as hovering over a rocky landscape .
There have been many documented theories as to what kind of shields the Amazons used. Some say they were Ivy shaped, others a more crescent moon shape. In art the Amazons have been shown with even round shields for their protection. It is this lead that we follow. As the worship of Artemis predated the Amazons, and like Lilith, so did the magic and mystery of talismanic power.

Harmony and happiness,
Health and wealth I bring,
And extra joy for you I bless
With the gift of a gold ring…

The Two of Pentacles
Astrological association: Capricorn
Planetary influence: Jupiter
Staying balanced but struggling. Although equilibrium is achievable, it is also a challenging state to hang on to. Flexibility is needed, and a more open mind.
reversed
It is not the right time for making decisions. Things cannot be rushed. Changes are afoot but the passage to and through them is potentially stormy. An unsettling time.

Shown here is a woman juggling two pentacles. Behind her is a stormy sea, but she is protected from the crashing waves by a thick stone wall with a gate. So while she is not immediately being worried by the swell, she is able to concentrate on more pressing matters at hand.

Indecision vexes me;
I don't know what I'll find,
I can't take chances that I see,
Until there is some peace of mind…

The Three of Pentacles
Astrological association: Capricorn
Planetary influence: Mars

Progress in work and improvements in the workplace, together with the growing wisdom and skills that accompany these.
reversed
Basically, the opposite is inferred here in as much as there is no enthusiasm, no real success, but complacency and mediocrity in the workplace to the point of laziness.

Here we have an Amazon artisan finishing off shields for her sisters to use in battle. In this card there are three shields having been completed, and in some circles these three pentacles are said to represent the mind, body and spirit, and the card shows the preparation that goes in to making them work as one which the Amazons achieved with great success.

With glorious skill I make my wears,
From Knowledge that comes from inside;
Mind, body and spirit I do prepare
To trade my art with pride…

The Four of Pentacles
Astrological association: Capricorn
Planetary influence: The Sun

This card speaks for itself on the surface. It symbolises gain and power and the security that goes with it. Possession being the law. Also, the determination to hang on to what one has, sending 'loss' far away. In some circles this card also heralds a new starting point and as such a new beginning.
reversed
Insecurity, delays
and loss. Possessiveness.

Sitting on a rich mosaic we see an Amazon, both confident and compelling. She is holding one of four shields close to her body, as if for extra protection, but is secure in herself and her own being. The three other shields are placed in a row behind her, showing that they too, also belong to her. Omphale was the Amazon Queen of Libya when Hercules was atoning for his sins for murdering his family. She bought the "hero" as a slave and made him to labour, as with all men in Amazon society, to do domestic chores. Whenever he made any mistakes she beat him with a golden sandal. Eventually she got bored with Hercules and sent him home..! .

Security and things I find,
That give me power anew;
Naked times I leave behind,
New courage pulls me through…

The Five of Pentacles
Astrological association: Taurus
Planetary influence: Mercury

Loss in any form, be it financial ruin, domestic, personal or health and the consequences thereafter. In some cases, mourning. It is a card of general sorrow and hardship. It is worth pointing out, however, that this card also shows the ability to stick together in time of need.
reversed
The losses and discords have already taken place and the task of trying to get things back to normal, al be it a lengthy one, has begun.

On the columns of an abandoned temple we see four of the five pentacles of this card, etched in the stone, with the fifth on an old shield leaning up against what was once a splendid stairway. The spirits of those who once worshipped here, are seen in the foreground, echoing the lament of worry and their subsequent ruin. The Amazons fought hard and suffered many losses. One of the yearly rites that the Priestess had to perform was the rites of Female Sorrow. This was usually performed in the last days of autumn. The lunar period was just after the full moon started to wane. This was a time when the Amazons could mourn their losses -war, child birth, magical attacks- and move on.

With troubled times and difficulties
Hardships with health and wealth,
For as things go, there's little to please,
So we must tread with much stealth

The Six of Pentacles
Astrological association: Taurus
Planetary influence: The Moon

An end to money troubles. This can arrive in the form of an inheritance or another similar sum of money like a bonus or other award, or it can show an increase in what there already is by way of money and fortune with a steady climb to opulence.
It can also indicate the giving and receiving of gifts between friends.

reversed
Simply put, when this card is reversed, the opposite applies, but jealousy and envy are also indicated.

Artemis was said to be the most beautiful of all the Goddesses. She was the inspiration of the ancient world and her wild ways and the freedom that she had were like gifts to the Amazons who followed her devoutly, not only emulating her ways by hunting and warfare, but also in the tender nurture of their sisters. In the eyes of the ancients, she handed out her favour to the Amazons.

Gifts of hope and charity,
Are coming now in to your life…
Money for you and this great bounty
Will put an end to your strife…

The Seven of Pentacles
Astrological association: Taurus
Planetary influence: Saturn

There comes a time where it is wise to pause and reflect upon a matter, or matters at hand. This card heralds a good opportunity to rake things over, especially as the seeds to the future have been sewn and they shall, with care, bear fruit. Although this is a card of gain, caution is advised, though simply as a way of ensuring that all is being looked at in the proper perspective.
reversed
There is real cause for anxiety about money, but if a cautious approach is followed, there is still time to save the day, and save a little on the way…

An Amazon is in an orchard, tending to and watching the fruits of her efforts grow. The Libyan Amazons were the first, or first-known, of their kind, predating even their Themiskyran Sisters and Myrine (Myrina) was their Queen. They lived on an island called Hespera, which was situated in Tritonis marsh land. Nearby, the Triton River flowed into what is now the Atlantic Ocean. Mount Atlas watched over their realm. These are the Amazons thought to have invaded the legendary Atlantis, which was fairly treated by Myrine in exchange for the foundation of a new city to be named after her, so enabling the ensured growth and prosperity of the Amazon phenomenon.

A time of peace and to reflect
On all that's going around;
Rake things over and select
The seeds of decision made sound..

The Eight of Pentacles
Astrological association: Virgo
Planetary influence: The Sun
Essentially, this card refers to work and work related issues.  In circumstances where employment has been a little hard to get hold of then this cards promises that this situation will improve. The Eight of Pentacles also indicates that the skills that are possessed now, however rudimentary, will soon develop and give rise to a promising and more rewarding career.
reversed
Slower progress than that which is desirable in the chosen career as the skills available still need to be improved upon before any real improvement can be made. Also, a tendency toward mediocrity in ones working practices.

The Libyan Amazons, under their Queen Myrina (Myrine), were prosperous and well-respected. They conquered the island of Hespera and made it theirs, where they worked hard and built a thriving community. Their presence was fearful when adorned in complete battle gear with helmets, breastplates and pears, all covered in snakeskin. Could this snakeskin have come from the conquered Gorgons, the bitter enemies of the Amazons? In any respect, it seemed a fitting attire when dealing with the 'snake haired' inhabitants of the area.

Working and crafting so steadily,
Meeting targets with ease
Brings in to life some normality
And faultless results that do please.

The Nine of Pentacles
Astrological association: Virgo
Planetary influence: Venus
A growth period with projects ripening to success, and success in general. Prosperity. Material well being, though it is not a state achieved without prudence. Like the Seven of Pentacles, this card refers to the fruits of our labours. Tenderness and care are needed in order to keep the cycle going and for the very real and rich results to fall in. Success will attract more success but we must always keep our feet on the ground.
reversed
The failure of plans, deceit, theft and loss of security.

A vision of Artemis is seen at the Grove of Nemi, which was a hallowed place to her in Latium. It was a place where the sacred king was killed in a duel by his rival, in order to continue the cycle of the year. In this way he became a sacrifice to the Goddess. Artemis was responsible in maintaining the natural order of things on Earth so that life, as well as death would be able to go on. Nothing would die before its time under her care. The grapes in the foreground are ripe and ready to pick.

A garden of wealth and peace I bring,
Contentment and gain become yours…
However don't stay or you'll find yourself waiting,
But look outward to further your cause…

The Ten of Pentacles
Astrological association: Virgo
Planetary influence: Mercury

Family and domestic matters, with many discussions and agreements being made. Sometimes the actual building, or rebuilding of a home is indicated here with wealth and prosperity and certainly security all being part of the play. This card sometimes speaks of contractual agreements outside the home being reached
reversed
Discord within the family, quarrels and feuds and the disorganisation and instability that comes with this. Sometimes this card, when reversed, will indicate financial or material loss

The Amazons had much the same family values as anywhere in the world, but it was the women fought and governed whilst the men performed the household tasks. It is said that each Amazon had to kill a man before she could marry, if indeed 'marriage' is the correct term here, and all male children were either killed or maimed at birth. However, those male children that did survive would be entitled to part of their mothers estate as this could be used as a dowry for their own marriage. Men were not allowed to own any property under the Amazon regime. It is thought that while many men, captive or native, were executed for rebelling against this, there were many more that were quite happy with the arrangements...

Families Gather and friends gather too
At home and from everywhere,
Future and present come together for you
And reasons for talks become clear.

The Princess of Pentacles
This is the scholars card and foretells of any scholarships, study or training that is being thought about or about to be undertaken. It shows application and study in these fields. Also a new approach to management and management issues. The person behind the princess is one who possesses high ideals that can be passed on to others, and one who will accept no less on which to build their future. They appreciate the finer things in life and will not settle for second best or a path that doesn't lead to these goals. It is the earthy aspect of earth.
reversed
An irresponsible individual who lacks common sense and also a sense of realism

In the true Spirit of the Amazons, around 700ad, Dihya al-Kahina /Al Kahena a Jewish/Berber priestess was crowned as queen by the Berbers, who accepted her as their military leader. Berbers were reputed to be the descendants of the Libyan Amazons, and true to form, Kahena was making her fearsome presence felt as she repelled the Arab invaders. Al-Kahina emerged as a war-leader during the Arab invasions, and proved amazingly successful at leading the tribes to join together against their common enemy. Her reputation as a strategist and sorceress spread, and she managed to unite the tribes of Ifrikya (the Berber name for North Africa), ruling and leading them in battle for five years before her betrayal and final defeat at the hands of the Arabs.

With study and reflection
Whilst learning new ways to fuel,
I focus in my meditation
And bring management to rule...

The Knight of Pentacles
Now is the time to focus on your ambitions and your goals, they are in sight, and to plan a head. Ambition but a methodical progress towards success in achievement is indicated. A solid 'salt of the Earth' type of man. One who moves slowly but surely towards his goals. A materialistic individual. The airy aspect of earth.
reversed
Carelessness and idleness and ultimately stagnation. A narrow minded and lazy person.

Here we see the Knight of Pentacles being represented as a centaur. There were many 'theories' a to the origins of the centaurs, one being that when the Amazons rode, and they were nearly always seen on horseback, it appeared as if they were one with the horse. This was taken a step further by combining horse and human in the now time honoured way. There were female centaurs in this strange land of Myth and Legend, the most famous one being Hylonome- though little has been written about them. Hylonome killed herself when her husband the centaur Cyllarus was slain in the battle with the Lapiths.
The Berbers under Kahena were, like the Amazons, no strangers to the use of horses and cavalry and this was instrumental in their wars against the Arab invaders.

I focus on the future here,
Press on with calm ambition...
I see the open doors, now near,
And move with calm progression....

The Queen of Pentacles
Like the Empress, this is a card that can herald the forthcoming birth of a child. It is motherhood and nurture. Where a child is not the question, this card shows the growth of a situation that requires your whole attention, but one that is not without its rewards which can be great. Also a dark haired woman, a woman born under an Earth sign. This is the watery aspect of earth.
reversed
A suspicious and narrow minded woman. No child is possible at this time, tough this will be confirmed by other cards next to her.

Queen Kahena proved herself not only as 'Queen' but as a highly skilled horsewoman and military strategist and general, so echoing the great ancestral Amazon Queens of ancient Libya. Under her triumphant command, the Berber armies liberated Carthage (again echoing her Amazon forebears), and swept on across North Africa, freeing it from both the Byzantines and the Arabs. All hailed her as their deliverer from their enemies. Kahena's armies flourished with Jewish volunteers flocking to her from the numerous hill communities across mountains. Even the Bishop of Bula Regia had flowers strewn along her path. Success was there, but it had taken her whole attention to achieve it.

With nurture life will grow for you,
A wealth of things to treasure...
My gift is here, so to renew
Security and pleasure...

The King of Pentacles
A shrewd and clever man. One who is established and that has made a success of his career. A dark haired man and a down to earth individual. Also success in your own ventures. A man born under an Earth sign. The fiery aspect of earth.
reversed
A cruel and corrupt, narrow minded individual, a man who is not to be trusted. An over bearing and dominating man or force.

The Lord of the Powers of Earth
The wily Arab commander, Hassan Ibn Numan was a man of shrewd intelligence and an ideal subject to illustrate the King of Pentacles. He already was a hailed as a successful commander, but had learned through bitter experience that the dedicated armies under queen Kahena's command were a formidable force. He set out on a classic "divide and conquer" (targeted at the differing cultures and nationalities) 'diplomatic' manoeuvre in preparation for another invasion.

Great achievements come with me,
Success and power too,
This dark and honest man you'll see,
Will bring such gifts to you...
