This spread is so called because it gives us a forecast specifically for the year ahead

Starting with the current month, (for instance, October) lay twelve cards in a circular fashion as shown, with each Tarot card drawn representing the next month and the subsequent months after that. Continue to lay the cards until the twelfth card (representing September in this case) is drawn and having come full circle, rests next to the initial card.   This will show the influences and occurrences for the coming year, month by month.   The edge of the card pointing to the centre of the circle is deemed its base or bottom edge and gives the impression that the cards are radiating outwards from the centre of our circle to deliver their portents to the waiting world.

For the purposes of our illustration, no cards have been reversed here but you will see that it is the bottom of each card that points to the centre of the spread.

Now take a thirteenth (!) card and place it in the middle of the circle. This is the card that tells us how the year is going to progress and it's eventual outcome.
It is worth noting however that this card can also indicate the purpose of the year as well as what can and will be achieved.
As with all readings, if more information is needed about any matter that is being highlighted by the Tarot, by placing further cards on the original cards in the spread, we can gather more detailed information about the matters being revealed.
